How to Layer Necklaces: A Simple Guide for Everyday Style

Woman wearing three layered gold necklaces: a short chain, a pearl strand and a long pendant necklace

A single necklace can look lovely. Two or three, layered well, can make even a plain white tee look like you put real thought into your outfit. The good news? Layering isn't complicated once you know a few simple rules. Here's our easy guide to layering necklaces for everyday wear, whether you're heading to brunch in Bondi or a Friday night dinner in Melbourne.

1. Start with three different lengths

The most common layering mistake is wearing necklaces that sit at the same length, so they tangle and blur together. Instead, aim for a gap of around 5 to 8 cm between each piece. An easy formula:

  • Short (around 40 cm): a choker or short chain that sits at the base of the neck
  • Medium (around 45 to 50 cm): a pendant or pearl strand that sits on the collarbone
  • Long (60 cm and up): a longer chain or tassel necklace that draws the eye down

Many necklaces come with a small extender chain, which makes it easy to fine-tune the length until everything sits just right.

2. Mix textures, not too many themes

Layering looks best when each necklace has its own character. Try pairing a smooth pearl strand with a fine chain and a simple pendant. Combine something bold, like a chunky link chain, with something delicate so one piece doesn't overpower the others. What usually doesn't work is three statement pieces at once: let one necklace be the hero and the others play a supporting role.

3. Choose your metal tone (or mix it on purpose)

Sticking to one tone, all gold or all silver, gives a polished, put-together look. Mixing gold and silver can look great too, but it works best when it looks intentional. A simple trick is to use a piece that combines both tones, or to repeat each tone at least twice across your necklaces, rings and bracelets.

4. Match your layers to your neckline

Your top or dress decides how much room you have to play with:

  • Crew neck: keep layers longer so they sit on top of the fabric, not hidden under it
  • V-neck: follow the shape with a pendant that points down into the V
  • Open collar or button-up shirt: shorter layers and pearls look effortless here
  • Strapless or off-the-shoulder: a choker plus one medium layer frames the collarbones beautifully
  • High neck or turtleneck: skip the short layers and go for one or two long chains

5. Add something personal

An initial necklace or a name piece turns a pretty stack into something meaningful. Wear your own initial, a partner's or your kids' initials. It's also the easiest way to make a layered look feel like yours, not something copied from a magazine.

6. Keep them from tangling

Tangled chains are the number one reason people give up on layering. A few tips that help:

  • Choose chains with different weights, as heavier chains move less and tangle less
  • Put on your longest necklace first and your shortest last
  • Store your necklaces flat or hanging, never in a pile in a drawer
  • If you layer the same combination often, a necklace layering clasp (a small spacer that holds several chains) is a handy little helper

7. Don't forget it's not just for women

Layering works for men too. A simple chain combined with a slightly longer, thicker chain is a clean, modern look that goes with a t-shirt just as easily as an open-collared shirt. Keep it to two layers and stick to one metal tone for an easy everyday style.

Caring for your layered jewellery

To keep your pieces looking their best, take them off before swimming at the beach or the pool, before exercising and before applying sunscreen, perfume or moisturiser. Wipe them with a soft, dry cloth after wear and store each piece separately so they don't scratch each other. A little care goes a long way, especially with the Aussie sun, salt and sweat.
